The Meridian War was a violent, drawn-out affair between the neighboring nations of Valdia and Rysa. Both nations hoped to lay claim to the traditionally neutral ground of the Meridian Valley, due to the ever-increasing number of natives who were born with the ability to spontaneously cast magic.
The war began in the year 1179 when the Rysans attacked a Valdian outpost in the valley. The Valdians suffered heavy casualties in several of the skirmishes that followed, and were forced to resort to arcane means in order to bolster their numbers. They discovered methods to reanimate corpses as zombies and golems. The tide of war swung in Valdia’s favor, and triggered a magical arms race that lasted for twenty agonizing years.
The Meridian Valley was caught in the crossfire. Many of its denizens perished, whether they were involved directly in the conflict or found themselves deprived of food or shelter from an ill-placed battle. The citizens of Arlyn, desperate to protect themselves, pooled the knowledge of their spellcasters and artificers in order to develop a magical barrier that could be raised in times of need to protect them from outlying attackers. According to their lore, this proved to be the only thing that saved them when the Great Calamity came to an abrupt and horrifying end.
