Before the Great Calamity, Arlyn was a decent-sized town located in the Meridian Valley. In the three hundred years since, it has grown large enough to be considered a city-state in its own right. The city is protected by an arcane barrier that keeps out hostile creatures, as well as most of the abberant magic slung about by the Havocstorms.
What magic does leak through has resulted in physical alterations of the populace. The vast majority of Arlynians no longer look human, and many of them exhibit traits that clearly set them apart as Havoctouched.
There are four major factions of the population in Arlyn: the magic-users, who are revered for their ability to provide food, water, and various other sundries for the populace; the laborers, who build and maintain the ever more complex structures the citizens dwell in; the craftsmen, who provide most of the other services; and the underground, which is often literal as well as figurative due to the number of caves and tunnels that have been dug beneath the surface city. The finite amount of space available inside the barrier, coupled with the steady growth of the population, has resulted in extensive and sometimes violent bids for territory between the factions.
